Today, second-generation web-based SRS solutions like PointSolutions make polling less disruptive in classrooms while providing instructors with more actionable analytics. The result is improved student performance, with 4.4% higher grades on the first midterm examination and 11.7% on the second, according to a study published by Dr. Ivan Dinev Ivanov in the Journal of Political Science Education.
Ivanov's study revealed that interactive polling through Echo360 lowered the DFWI (or DFW) rate by minimizing variations in student performance across a range of exams. The reduction in the DFW rate shows that implementing interactive strategies provides a positive impact when it comes to increasing opportunities for equity in education.
Listening to a lecture is a passive experience, especially when the material is dry. The possibility of live polls springing up gives students a reason to pay attention, promoting engagement. Poll responses can also stimulate lively class discussions, leading to an exchange of ideas that most students find far more interesting than a solid hour of lecture.
According to Ivanov's study, the use of second-generation SRS tools such as PointSolutions helped students maintain a cumulative average of about 80% across two mid-terms, a final exam, and an essay. The same study also revealed that student performance became more consistent when instruction was reinforced with web-based SRS tools.
