Nearly All Students Have Unique Learning Needs

Most educational institutions have accommodations for students with sensory or motor impairments, but many other learning differences and needs go ignored. Learners have different study styles. They have different linguistic and cultural preferences. They have generational differences, and some operate under significant financial or practical constraints. McMaster University uses recorded lectures on EchoVideo to meet the needs of all learners, providing an accessible and inclusive education for everyone.

Echo360's e3 Formula in Action

Modern students lead busy lives, and spending two hours in a lecture hall isn’t always something they can afford to do. When instructors use Echo360 to capture lecture content, students can watch it at their convenience.

Equity

Lectures are great for aural learners, but visual learners prefer something they can see. With EchoVideo’s automatic speech recognition (ASR) capabilities, recorded lectures are automatically transcribed so McMaster University students can read the content. The convenience of on-demand playback also helps busy people pursue an education at McMaster even if they lack the time to be full-time students.

Engagement

Younger generations don’t want a passive education, but instead, an active learning environment where communication and sharing are paramount. Echo360 supports this through anonymous polling capabilities that reduce the impact of gender and cultural biases while making it easier for all students to contribute to broader class discussions.

Evidence

McMaster University has performed multiple surveys regarding the efficacy of Echo360 and the evidence is clear: Students love the technology. Of 247 Faculty of Science students surveyed, 76% reported using EchoVideo in some capacity. Of those, 92% reported that lecture capture made their courses more accessible while 84% believed it deepened their understanding of course content. Student Union President Giancarlo Da-Ré was even elected on a platform calling for increased use of Echo360 in McMaster classrooms.

3 Key Takeaways

Mobile is King

Students aren’t always on campus, and EchoVideo allows McMaster University students to engage with lecture content at any time and on any device. Many students (including Student Union President Giancarlo Da-Ré) spend more time studying at home!

Demonstrations Are Powerful

Some McMaster instructors were leery of EchoVideo at first because they felt it would encourage students to skip classes. The school solved this problem with the Echo360 sandpit project: An experiment where students and instructors swapped roles so professors could see the educational value of recording classroom lectures. Instructors embraced the technology after experiencing what it could do.

WCAG Compliance

EchoVideo meets or exceeds all WCAG 2.1 guidelines, promoting accessibility by ensuring all students can access video content. With accessibility being a key goal at McMaster University, embracing EchoVideo was a no-brainer.
