Box Hill Institute offers both vocational and higher education programs and degrees in a wide array of programs ranging from Hospitality and Tourism to Construction and Plumbing. According to Pauline Farrell, former Box Hill Institute Executive Manager of Blended E-Learning Solutions, approximately 60 percent of students enrolled in these programs study part-time, both locally and overseas.

Box Hill turned to Echo360 to help deliver flexible learning to their diverse student body. Many of these students exhibit a preference for more visual or auditory learning styles when it comes to mastering the practical skills and knowledge required for their vocational field of study.

Says Farrell, “Some of the great stories we’ve had from student experiences is that they’ve been able to use Echo360 anywhere, anytime, any place. And also in a mode where they can take in content in bite-sized amounts, but in a highly visual manner.”

Echo360 also helps Box Hill Institute create greater engagement among students, no matter where they’re located. Notes eLearning Coordinator, Aliki Komps, “Getting the responses and the engagement from the students is very beneficial because ultimately they are the participants, they are the learners. They’re our clients. When students can tap into that at any point and also provide us feedback around our Echo360 videos, that’s something we can build upon.”

Komps has witnessed increased student engagement as a result of using Echo360 first hand, particularly in vocational courses that require precise, hands-on practical demonstrations such as cabinet making and carpentry.

Echo360 is also playing a role in engaging students in Box Hill’s Higher Ed courses. Ben O’Hara, Head of Higher Education for Music Business, uses the analytics in Echo360 to gauge student engagement and identify content that students may be struggling with. He’s also observed how his students use Echo360 engagement tools for discussion and social learning surrounding his content.

Says O’Hara, “We’ve still got as much engagement as we ever had in terms of in the classroom, but we know that there is more material going into the students’ minds and we can see that in the results that the students are bringing. Echo360 is a valuable tool on that level.”
