Partnering Peer Instruction with Point Solutions for Enhanced Engagement

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, we are constantly seeking innovative strategies to enhance student engagement and comprehension. It is a dynamic and evolving process that has seen the use of learning management systems, gamification, VR and AR, as well as flipped learning models in recent years.

Dr. Andrew Straw is an Associate Professor for Pharmacy at Cedarville University in Ohio. Cedarville, a private university in Ohio, has seen significant growth every year over the past 15 years with regard to enrollment. Dr. Straw, in his teaching processes, focuses on the importance of building strong patient relationships through direct patient care services, and he brings that same focus on person-to-person interaction into his classroom. Straw uses peer instruction, popularized by Eric Mazur’s research in the 1990’s, and incorporates Echo360’s student response system (ARS), Point Solutions, to create a learning environment that fosters active learning and meaningful student interactions.

Providing Value Through Polling Innovation: Engagement, Technology, and Inclusivity

Joy McDonald, Associate Director of Academic Technology,  believes that the ability of EchoPoll to be used as an enterprise solution enhances the learning experience for students.  Not only was McDonald interested in a solution that was flexible and easy for faculty to use, she appreciated the bonus of the deep integration, both with the learning management system as well as with single sign-on technology for streamlined authentication. She notes, “we’re able to take advantage of all of the security features, the roster integration, the gradebook (integration). So it’s been really effective.”

By providing instructors with valuable insights into student responses and engagement patterns, EchoPoll enables data-driven decision-making, allowing faculty to continuously refine and optimize instructional strategies. And McDonald hopes that the ease of use of EchoPoll will appeal to the University’s students affairs and administrative offices of the university to extend engagement in meetings and other extra-curricular activities.
