How Virtual Breakout Rooms for Students Promote Active Learning

Active learning strategies are instructional activities that involve students doing things and thinking about what they are doing. An active learning framework can help you consider how your students…

  • Encounter new information and ideas – watching videos, reading PDFs in advance of class, or viewing a short presentation you’ve created
  • Engage with information and ideas – through discussions with their peers or documenting their conversations in a word processing document
  • Reflect on their learning – spend the last few minutes of their online class session doing reflective writing or sharing their thoughts through an open-ended poll

When students purposefully encounter, engage, and reflect on new information, active learning is taking place and information is retained much better. One of the online teacher’s best tools to promote active learning is virtual breakout rooms for students in small groups or pairs.

Echo360’s Echosystem is a portfolio of engagement solutions designed and used to achieve engagement and positive learning outcomes. Part of the portfolio is a program called EchoEngage. EchoEngage supports online education in a variety of ways. One of its most exciting set of features is the built-in virtual classroom video tool, which allows for screen sharing, whiteboarding, and virtual breakout rooms for students.

Strategies for Using Virtual Breakout Rooms

In a physical classroom, it’s easy to have students quickly group into pairs or small groups to solve a problem, discuss a concept, or otherwise engage with information presented by the teacher. Online classes are no different when you use EchoEngage’s virtual breakout rooms. As the instructor, you can assign students to breakout rooms randomly or choose who gets into which group. Here are some ideas for using virtual breakout rooms to help your students with active learning.

After presenting a new concept that students may or may not agree with, you can create four breakout rooms: strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. Then set the specific question that you want students to agree or disagree with and run a quick, anonymous poll (also available through EchoEngage) to see which students fall into which categories.

Then assign them to the appropriate breakout rooms, have them discuss the reasons behind their opinions, and appoint one member of the group to share with the class when the breakout rooms are closed. This requires students not only to think critically about an idea, but to take a public stance on how they feel about it.

An example idea might be, “Art classes should be graded purely on participation and not on the quality of the student’s work.” Any concept that can be debated can be used for this type of breakout room activity.

  • Set students a problem to solve and place them in small groups in breakout rooms. Give them a time limit to solve the problem and then choose one student from each breakout room to present their solution. The types of problems that can benefit from this strategy are limitless. It could be a math problem where students have to not only solve for the answer, but demonstrate how they reached the answer. It could be a civics problem where students need to allocate funds to certain public services and explain the logic behind their choices.

  • Virtual breakout rooms can be used to brainstorm ideas. These can be ideas discussed in class like the causes of a particular war or the goals the students think they should reach in an upcoming unit. These could also be more fun ideas that help build community between students, like brainstorming ideas for ice cream toppings for a special treat day at school or ideas about where they’d like to go for a field trip.

These are just a few of the countless ways you can use EchoEngage’s virtual breakout rooms to promote active learning in the classroom. The only limit to the ways you can use these breakout rooms is your imagination.
