Empower Every Learner With Data-Driven Instruction

When a teacher uses data-driven instruction, or DDI, they regularly gather and analyze data from both formative and summative assessments to gain insight into how well students are understanding and mastering the classroom material. The teacher then uses these insights to adjust instructional materials and methods to provide better for students’ instructional needs.

With the Echo360 Echosystem, you have everything you need to create a data-driven classroom. EchoAuthor allows for quick and easy course creation and editing options that allow you to pace the learning narrative while measuring progress. EchoExam makes creating assessments a snap, so you can continually measure progress and adapt lessons accordingly.

Why is data-driven instruction important?

  1. Data-driven learning is tailored to students’ needs rather than adhering to an arbitrarily set scope and sequence of instruction. This allows you to meet your state’s standards by teaching at a rhythm that more effectively lets students master their learning.
  2. Student data gives an objective point of reference for understanding how each student is performing. It highlights which students are struggling and the specific content they are struggling with. This leads to SMART goals as intervention strategies and allows for the tracking of the success rates of interventions.
  3. You can use the data as an essential element of professional growth. The data gathered can guide your instructional strategies and help you modify what you do in the classroom based on your students’ needs as you continue to hone your craft.
  4. Excellent administrators use student and teacher data to develop and support teachers as they notice patterns where the school needs additional support. If a particular class is falling behind, they can support that teaching team. If students fail in a certain area of instruction on a wide basis, the curriculum can be adjusted.

The 5 Elements of Data-Driven Instruction

There are five essential elements involved in DDI. The following descriptions of the elements demonstrate how the Echosystem can help you deliver data-driven learning effectively.

  • First, you must have reliable baseline data. With EchoExam, you can easily create assessments to determine each student’s and class’s baseline data. The quick test wizard allows you to create a comprehensive exam in minutes. The analytics functions give you the option of viewing results at the class and individual levels. This way, you can be certain that you will test the same type of information over the monitored developmental period.
  • The second element of DDI is to set SMART goals based on the data discovered in the baseline study. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound. You then provide lessons that help students achieve the SMART goals. EchoAuthor provides an intuitive and quick interface for course creation. As you create these lessons, you can ensure that students demonstrate understanding before moving on. You can mark specific elements, like 1- or 2-question quizzes, as required interactions before additional content will be displayed, even within the same lesson.
  • The third element of DDI is where the instructor uses the same types of reflective, summative, and formative assessments as they did when gathering a baseline. These assessments give continual feedback as to whether the goal has a positive, negative, or neutral effect. With EchoExam, you can create similar, but different, assessments to make sure you’re measuring the same types of data.
  • The fourth element of DDI involves Professional Learning Communities. For example, if there is a student who is struggling, all of the teachers who have that student in their classroom will meet regularly to discuss the intervention and SMART goals they’re using to help that student improve and provide each other with feedback. EchoAuthor allows users to collaborate when creating content and give each other feedback. You can also use it to add action items for individual users, such as students who are struggling with certain concepts.
  • Targeted interventions are the fifth element of DDI, which are interwoven throughout the third and fourth elements. With EchoEngage, you can create personalized assignments for students based on how they are progressing on the SMART goals. You can also capture live teaching presentations with EchoVideo and pair them with assignments for students who were not present during the lecture. The Echosystem has many features that can be used to support individuals or small groups of students as needed. Also, lessons created in EchoAuthor are easily editable using EchoVideo if it appears that the instructional material is found to be lacking.
