New Ways to Present Blended Learning in the Classroom

Most modern educators are familiar with blended learning, or combining traditional face-to-face instruction with digital tools to better engage students and enhance their comprehension. Some commonplace blended learning examples include computer-based homework, assigning educational content on YouTube, and incorporating multimedia elements during live classes.

Of course, blended learning examples don’t have to be limited to the techniques that everybody knows about. The key to getting more out of blended learning is ensuring that all students have full access to the digital components, which often means incorporating them directly into the lessons that take place on campus. Echo360 has created an experience framework with multiple digital tools and combined them into a single Echosystem to help students, teachers, and administrators achieve personalized learning experiences. The following examples of blended learning activities will help you realize what’s possible.

Station Rotation

Station rotation models involve students moving between different stations at set intervals during class meetings, at least one of which involves using a computer in a classroom or computer lab. Common blended learning examples of this type include elementary school students playing educational games and science lab rotations so students can watch experiments that wouldn’t be feasible for them to perform in person.

All of the moving around can make it difficult for instructors to track learner progress, but that’s not a problem with the Echosystem. EchoEngage provides instructors and admins with intuitive dashboards that show them who has completed what at a glance, giving them the evidence they need to step in when necessary. Students can also send a message whenever they don’t understand something. EchoAuthor allows course creators to block off some aspects of a lesson until students have demonstrated mastery of previous concepts.

The Flipped Classroom

The flipped model may not appear in a list of examples of blended learning in the classroom since the innovation takes place off-site, but it still changes what live meetings look like dramatically. Students are given self-paced assignments such as reading their textbook before class begins, allowing the live instructor to focus on that knowledge’s applications instead of the raw information. This saves instructor time while helping students feel like they have more control.

EchoEngage makes it easy for teachers to assign self-paced projects to an entire class or smaller groups of students, ensuring that every learner gets what they need and nothing they don’t. If a student is lagging, their instructor can assign remedial work on an individualized basis. Collaborative tools help instructors make the most of remote class meetings including real-time polling and virtual breakout rooms to facilitate group work.

Outside-In and Inside-Out Models

Both of these blended learning examples involve a planned succession from a classroom to a more practical experience or vice versa. For example, watching a video on local wildlife in class before taking a nature walk would be an inside-out model since instruction begins inside the classroom and ends outside of it. If students head outside to watch a solar eclipse and then study why that happened in the classroom, that would be an outside-in model.

Video content is a common classroom component of both models, and EchoVideo makes consuming it easier than ever before. You can automatically caption long videos and index their contents, making it easy for students to search for any specific details they missed. Captioning also promotes accessibility as students can read along with what they’re watching.

The blended learning examples above are only the tip of the iceberg. Students love using technology and virtually any way to incorporate it into the classroom will deliver strong results.
